| Cancer Awareness for Deaf Men NLDF organised a Deaf Men’s Health on Saturday 7th June 2008. Everyone who attended enjoyed the day and found the 3 speakers really interesting. 1st speaker was Specialist Nurse Mhairi, from Wishaw General Hospital, gave a talk about Bowel Cancer and was followed by question answer session. 2nd speaker was Tam Hewitt, who gave an insight into his experience of having prostate cancer. It was very interesting as he talked about his experience and treatment etc. 3rd speaker was given by Helen Sneddon from NHS Lanarkshire about Testicular Cancer and how men should look after themselves etc. There was plenty of time for questions and answers. During the day the raffle raised £76.00 to Cancer Research - many thanks to the men who kindly donated raffles prizes and money donated. Committee members provided a very enjoyable lunch for the men attending and the 2 interpreters. On behalf of NLDF we would like to thank committee members who helped prepare lunch and would like to thank the interpreters who given up their usual day on Saturday to come to interpret for the day. Feedback from the men said it was very good information given by Mhairi, Tam and Helen and make them more aware about bowel, prostate and testicular cancer. |

Cancer Awareness for Deaf Women at Whifflet Community Centre, Whifflet, Coatbridge was held on Saturday 3rd May 2008. Catriona Lafferty from Deaf Connections gave an informative talk about breast cancer. We found it very interesting to find out about looking after yourself. We also had a talk by Joyce Dickson who went through treatment with no interpreter and we now realise now how important it is to have access at different stages of treatment and care. During launch we had a ‘healthy eating’ buffet lunch which was delicious and good to have the opportunity to meet up and chat and to sell raffles. In afternoon session we had talk about Bowel Cancer again given by Catriona, we found it very interesting to find out so much about different types of bowel cancer. Its very interesting gets more information on breast and bowel cancer. Catriona give tasting demo of different fruits, yogurt, and juices. The taste was wonderful and really easy to make. Very enjoyable. Finally, we had raffles and draw for prizes, the money raised (£67.00) goes to Cancer Researcher to help them research cancer causes and cure. We now realise how important it is to look for early signs and symptoms of cancer and to get early treatment and not ignore changes in our bodies. We would like to thank Catriona Lafferty, Joyce Dickson, Interpreters, and Notetaker, and also thanks to the women who came along to this event. It’s very enjoyable and really worthwhile getting more information on these important issues. |
