Certificate for LSPs working with Deaf and Deafblind People (Notetaking)

Course description:
This qualification is the professional qualification for Notetakers. It contains knowledge, skills and competences, and professional practice.

Candidates must achieve the four units below for the full qualification.

Certificated:
This course is accredited by Signature (Council for the Advancement of Communication with Deaf People - CACDP). This certificate consists of 4 units: - L304, P301, T302 & P302.

L304 - Accessible English for Deaf and Deafblind People
At the end of this unit of learning, the successful learner will:

  • know the key concepts, structures and discourse features used to describe/analyse English;
  • know reasons and techniques for making spoken English accessible for deaf and deafblind people;
  • know reasons and techniques for making written English accessible for deaf and deafblind people.

Topics covered:

  • Concepts and structures for describing and analysing English
  • Issues around access to spoken English. Ways of making spoken English more accessible for deaf and deafblind people
  • Issues around access to written English. Ways of making written English more accessible for deaf and deafblind people

P301 - Professional Issues in Facilitating Communication with Deaf and Deafblind People
At the end of this unit of learning, the successful learner will:

  • know the range of professional roles available to meet the communication needs of deaf and/or deafblind people;
  • understand the limitations and boundaries of the roles of communication professionals;
  • understand the technical and ethical dilemmas faced by communication professionals, and know how to resolve them;
  • know the implications for communication professionals of relevant legislation;
  • understand the role and function of relevant professional regulatory and support bodies;• know the key principles of professional regulatory procedures.

  • Communication professionals: roles, responsibilities and working relationships
    The range of provision to meet the communication needs of deaf and/or deafblind people:
  • Technical and ethical dilemmas
  • Legislation and risk
  • Regulation and professional support

T302 - Notetaking Skills and Strategies for Working with Deaf People
At the end of this unit of learning, the successful learner will:

  • know the processes involved in carrying out a notetaking task;
  • be able to take notes appropriately for a deaf/deafblind person.

Topics covered:

  • Notetaking techniques and strategies
  • Working with the message
  • Producing the message – technical skills necessary to take notes
  • Working with the target of the message

P302 - Professional Practice for Language Service Professionals
At the end of this unit of learning, the successful learner will:

  • understand the detailed requirements of the role;
  • know how to deal with professional issues relating to the role: regulation, registration, ethical issues, relationships with other professionals;
  • understand the legal and organisational constraints on carrying out the role in various settings;
  • be able to prepare for an assignment for the role;
  • be able to deliver an assignment appropriately in a range of settings;
  • be able to deal appropriately with technical and ethical dilemmas where these occur;
  • be able to evaluate own performance following an assignment and identify strategies for professional development.
