Sensory Impairment Awareness training

This course raises some of the issues around sensory impairment, it teaches basic communication skills and introduces resources available for deaf, blind and deafblind people. It covers several areas of visual and hearing impairment and builds on a foundation provided by the social model of disability. SI 4 logos.

Visual Impairment Awareness:
The overall aim of the course is to improve understanding and raise awareness of issues relating to visual impairment. Issues covered include: Visual challenges and solutions to enable people to manage their daily lives and remain independent and Communication difficulties and solutions.

Deaf Awareness
This course gives the learner introductory-level knowledge and understanding about deafness. It describes what it means to be deaf, how being deaf affects one’s ability to operate in society, and introduces basic skills that can be used to assist communication and identifies what assistance is available to improve communication between deaf and hearing people.

Deafblind Awareness
This course gives the learner introductory-level knowledge and understanding about deafblindness. It describes what it means to be deafblind, how being deafblind affects one’s ability to operate in society, and introduces basic skills that can be used to assist communication and identifies what assistance is available to improve communication between deafblind and hearing people.

Who’s it for and what’s it about?

This course is aimed at those front-line service providers who may meet either deaf, blind or deafblind peple in theire everyday duties.

This course highlihgts the range of people who may be described as or who may describe themselves as visually, hearing or dual sensory impaired.

This course usually takes place in one day from 9.30am - finishing no later than 4.30pm.

Understanding speech & language
Hearing aids – benefits & limitations
Communication tactics – ‘tool-box’
Fingerspelling/Deafblind Manual/Block alphabets
